Bengal fast-tracks land acquisition near Doklam
The West Bengal government has given the green light for expedited land acquisition for a significant railway initiative. This action will hasten the development of the Chalsa-Naxalbari railway line, a project of strategic importance that will enhance connectivity in the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction area. Following the monsoon, a joint survey by the railways and the forest department will take place, promising to boost tourism and improve regional connectivity. India plans to invest up to Rs 45,000 crore over the next two years to upgrade railway infrastructure along its borders with China, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The project aims to strengthen military logistics and civilian connectivity across frontier states, reinforcing strategic preparedness amid evolving regional security challenges and geopolitical shifts.
Emirates accepting Cryptocurrency for bookings
Emirates has launched Crypto.com Pay as a payment option on its website and mobile app, allowing eligible UAE residents to pay for flight bookings using cryptocurrency. The service supports bookings settled in UAE Emirati dirhams (AED) and is part of the airline’s push to expand digital payment options under Dubai’s cashless economy strategy. The payment option is currently available to eligible UAE residents with a Crypto.com account.
11 new flying schools to address pilot shortages
Airports Authority of India awarded eleven new flying training slots with an aim to boost domestic pilot training capacity. The expansion will help meet the projected demand for over thirty thousand pilots. New facilities will add hundreds of training aircraft and simulators. This initiative will reduce foreign training dependence and retain expenditure within India. India’s civil aviation sector is set for rapid expansion with the Ministry of Civil Aviation estimating a requirement of over 30,000 to 31,800 additional pilots over the next decade. Indian carriers are expected to induct around 500 more aircraft in the next five years while the airport network is projected to grow by 50 more airports. The 11 new FTOs are projected to add 60 to 70 training aircraft in the initial phase, scaling up to a combined fleet of 110 to 120 aircraft at full capacity, along with multiple simulators and training devices.
S. Arabia coalition to secure Red Sea shipping
Saudi Arabia is seeking an international coalition to safeguard Red Sea shipping lanes. This initiative aims to counter ongoing Houthi attacks which threaten commercial vessels. The Houthis previously declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea. Riyadh has responded with air strikes targeting Houthi military facilities. These actions have opened a new front in regional conflicts and impacted oil prices.
NHAI project worth Rs. 1.8 Lakh Crores
The National Highways Authority of India will award 54 projects in 2026-27. These projects will span 2,442 kilometers and cost ₹1,80,017 crore. This is a reduction from the 124 projects planned for 2025-26. Uttar Pradesh leads with seven projects, followed by other states. Several states including Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra will receive six projects each. five in Punjab, four each in Gujarat and Karnataka, three each in Delhi and Andhra Pradesh, two each in Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha and one project each in Assam, Kerala, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.
