Solar Rooftop boom outside of Metros

Tier-II and tier-III cities are leading India’s rooftop solar adoption significantly. The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar scheme is driving this widespread adoption across the nation. Over 36 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed, benefiting many households. Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh are the leading states in solar installations. The focus is now shifting towards urban areas and low-income households. The government has released over ₹25,000 crore in subsidies from the scheme’s total outlay of ₹75,021 crore. Households installing rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW are eligible for a central subsidy of ₹78,000, with several states offering additional incentives. The Centre is also pushing the Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model to extend the benefits of rooftop solar to low-income households that cannot install systems because of financial or structural constraints. The World Bank committed USD 890 million for India’s solar rooftop initiative. This funding aims to bring clean energy to millions of homes nationwide. The program will also create significant job opportunities across the renewable energy sector. India seeks to achieve net zero emissions by 2070 and increase non-fossil fuels. This support will help scale residential solar and reduce household electricity costs.

Increased legal hiring in real estate firms

India’s real estate developers are expanding in-house legal teams to navigate everything from land acquisitions and redevelopment projects to insolvency-led transactions and new asset classes, as the sector becomes more institutionalised and deal-making grows increasingly complex. Companies are expecting a general counsel to act as a strategic advisor to the business, proactively mitigate risks and contribute to key business decisions. A recent KPMG-Ficci report, ‘Reimagining India’s Real Estate Landscape’, estimated the country’s real estate market in 2025 at $650 billion and projected it to reach $1 trillion by 2030. Promoter-led companies are creating new roles of head of litigation, land acquisitions and others that report to group general counsel and are building leadership teams. In the case of private equity firms, as project portfolios expand across geographies and private equity investors demand stronger governance, companies are hiring specialists and deputy GC (general counsel) roles.
